Certification Information:

On successful completion of the course and required assessments, delegates achieve the Open Awards Level 3 Award in Fibre Optics Installation and Testing. This recognised Level 3 qualification demonstrates practical competence in fibre optic installation, termination, fusion splicing, testing, fault finding and associated working practices.

The qualification is recognised by the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) as an accepted Level 3 fibre qualification route for the ECS Network Infrastructure Installer (Level 3) card – Fibre. Applicants wishing to apply for an ECS card must also meet the additional ECS eligibility requirements, including the required installation experience and a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements are required. This course is suitable for both new entrants and experienced engineers who want to develop practical fibre optic installation skills. A basic understanding of telecommunications, data networks or network infrastructure can be helpful, but it is not essential.

Delegates should be comfortable with practical, hands-on training and be prepared to take part in both theory and practical assessment activities throughout the course. Previous experience with fibre optics is not required, making the course suitable for people starting a new career as well as those looking to develop or formalise existing skills.

Career Progression:

The course also provides a strong foundation for further development in advanced fibre testing and fault finding, including OTDR testing and trace analysis, as well as fibre network planning and design, air-blown fibre and blown cable installation, external fibre infrastructure and specialist optical testing. Delegates may progress onto advanced training in OTDR and fibre testing, air-blown fibre and blown cable technology, fibre optic planning and design, or specialist chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) testing. For experienced installers, the qualification can also help formalise existing practical skills at Level 3.
