Learners do not just learn theory — they physically install, terminate, test, certify, and troubleshoot copper data cabling systems throughout the course.

Fibre Optic Installation & Testing

Fibre optics now form the backbone of modern enterprise networking, telecommunications, defence infrastructure, cloud computing, and hyperscale data centres.

This programme delivers practical hands-on training covering both:

  • Single-mode fibre optic systems

  • Multi-mode fibre optic systems

Learners gain practical experience installing, preparing, terminating, testing, and fault-finding fibre optic cabling systems used in enterprise networks, telecoms, and data centre environments.

Practical fibre training includes:

  • Installing single-mode and multi-mode fibre optic cabling

  • Handling fibre safely and correctly during installation

  • Installing fibre through containment, cabinets, patch panels, and enclosures

  • Preparing fibre cables for termination and splicing

  • Stripping, cleaning, cleaving, and inspecting fibre

  • Installing fibre connectors, pigtails, splice trays, and fibre management systems

  • Fusion splicing and mechanical splicing

  • Building fibre links between cabinets, panels, and network areas

  • Cleaning and inspecting fibre connectors using professional inspection tools

  • Testing fibre links using EXFO and VIAVI equipment

  • Using live fibre identifiers safely

  • Performing light source and power meter testing

  • Performing OLTS testing using Softing and Fluke platforms

  • Measuring insertion loss and link loss budgets

  • Identifying dirty connectors, macrobends, breaks, high-loss splices, and damaged fibre

  • Producing professional fibre test reports and certification documentation

This practical fibre training gives learners the confidence to work on real fibre installations from cable preparation through to final certification.

Advanced OTDR Testing

Advanced OTDR testing skills are now essential within telecommunications, enterprise networking, and hyperscale data centre infrastructure.

Learners complete practical advanced OTDR training, developing the diagnostic skills required to test, analyse, and troubleshoot fibre optic networks.

Practical OTDR training includes:

  • Setting up and operating EXFO and VIAVI OTDR equipment

  • Selecting correct OTDR test parameters

  • Testing single-mode and multi-mode fibre links

  • Launch lead and receive lead use

  • Analysing OTDR traces

  • Identifying events, reflections, splices, connectors, bends, and breaks

  • Measuring splice loss and link attenuation

  • Locating faults accurately by distance

  • Understanding dead zones and ghost events

  • Troubleshooting complex fibre faults

  • Producing OTDR reports for client handover

These advanced diagnostic skills significantly improve employability within fibre engineering and data centre infrastructure roles.

Fibre Optic Test Equipment

Learners gain practical experience using professional equipment from leading manufacturers including:

  • EXFO

  • VIAVI

Training includes the use of:

  • OTDRs (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers)

  • Live Fibre Identifiers

  • Optical Light Sources

  • Optical Power Meters

  • OLTS (Optical Loss Test Set) equipment

Copper Cabling Test Equipment

For copper data communications testing, learners work with professional certification platforms including:

  • Softing WireXpert MP

  • Fluke Networks certification platforms

The Softing WireXpert MP platform supports testing and certification across:

  • Cat 5e

  • Cat 6

  • Cat 6A

  • Category 8.1

  • Category 8.2

This gives learners exposure to modern high-performance copper certification used within enterprise and hyperscale data centre environments.

Hyperscale Data Centres & AI Infrastructure

The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and hyperscale data centres is fundamentally changing network infrastructure design.

Modern hyperscale facilities increasingly rely on high-density fibre optic infrastructure to support:

  • AI processing clusters

  • High-performance computing (HPC)

  • Cloud platforms

  • Spine-leaf network architectures

  • Ultra-low latency environments

  • 100G, 400G and emerging 800G network speeds

As AI infrastructure continues to expand globally, fibre optic deployment is increasing significantly across enterprise and data centre environments.

Traditional copper-only infrastructure is no longer sufficient for many modern high-performance environments, making fibre optic integration a critical part of future network architecture.

This growing demand has created major opportunities for engineers with practical fibre installation, testing, certification, and OTDR diagnostic skills.
