Fibre Optic Outside Plant Telecom Installation Course Level 3

Telecommunications worker wearing PPE and a safety harness climbing a ladder and working on overhead cables during pole safety and working-at-height training.

At Total Network Solutions (Europe) Ltd, operating under the name Fibre Optics Training, we actively collaborate with employers within the IT & Telecommunications infrastructure industry to tackle the skills shortage now and in the future. For nearly two decades, we have been dedicated to supporting both the telecommunications sector and service leavers. This comprehensive Fibre Optic Telecom Outside Plant Installation Course covers all aspects of fibre optic network deployments in telecom networks, leaving no stone unturned. It covers the deployment process from exchanges to aggregation nodes, primary and secondary nodes, and the access network, where the final termination of underground and aerial subscriber nodes is terminated and fitted. You will learn to build quality networks within our purpose-built facility, equipped with underground chambers and telegraph poles, along with an exchange setup simulating real-world scenarios that you would find in a typical fibre network. From the exchange all the way to the customer’s last drop, we have it covered.

About this course:

Our Level 3 course is designed to give your career a significant boost. We incorporate the Open Awards Level 3 units into our program to ensure you can start your new job effectively and qualify for various roles.

You will put yourself at the forefront of technology. The job market can be challenging, but possessing the right vocational skills will give you an edge over the competition. With an industry-recognised qualification from Open Awards and COFNII, you’ll also have credentials that are transferable to other countries.

It comprises both theoretical and practical components, covering single-mode and multi-mode fibre. Throughout the course, you will learn the following:

Students will learn the correct termination techniques required to install and fusion splice fibre-optic cables; this course covers conventional telecom access and passive optical networks (PON), as well as the terminology most fibre internet service providers use.

This course is a journey towards empowerment, teaching delegates how to build fibre telecom networks correctly. It will equip them with hands-on practical training to develop and commission the network to the required high standards. This course has been created in collaboration with alternative network providers (ALTNETS) and the Confederation of Fibre Optics, utilising their network infrastructure and installer expertise.

Learning Objectives:

✔️ Building and configuration of aggregation and primary nodes

✔️ Creating loop joints

✔️ Installing Aerial and underground subscriber nodes (ASN & USN)

✔️ Installation of connector block terminals (CBT)

✔️ Installation of primary and secondary splitter nodes

✔️ Be able to understand network diagrams and topologies

✔️ Understand Passive optical networks and splitter ratios

✔️ Testing optical splitters

Frequently Asked Questions

What is meant by “Outside Plant” in fibre optic networks?

Outside Plant (OSP) refers to the physical fibre optic infrastructure that exists outside of buildings. This includes ducts, chambers, poles, cabinets, and distribution points that connect the core network to homes and businesses.

What types of fibre networks will I learn about during the course?

The training introduces learners to modern fibre access networks such as Passive Optical Networks (PON) used in FTTP broadband deployments. You will also gain an understanding of how fibre infrastructure connects exchanges, aggregation nodes, and subscriber connections.

Will I gain experience with real network deployment scenarios?

Yes. The course is designed to replicate real telecom environments so learners can practise working with infrastructure commonly found in fibre deployments, such as network nodes, fibre distribution points, and customer drop connections.

Can this course help someone move into fibre network installation roles?

Yes. Many learners take this course to build the practical skills needed for roles within telecoms and fibre broadband deployment projects, including work with network contractors, infrastructure providers, and alternative network operators (ALTNETs).

Where does the training take place?

Training takes place at our specialist fibre optic training facility in Crewe, Cheshire, where learners can practise installation techniques in a purpose-built environment that simulates real fibre network infrastructure.
